Summary
Woven silk sari of exceptional quality; indigo ground, self-striped lengthways in dark and lighter blue, with fringed ends. The superimposed field pattern of buff and white stripes, horizontal and vertical, to form outline squares each enclosing a diamond shape, alternately white, yellow, red and green, to create diagonal bands. The ends with buff and white striped forming horizontal bands, each patterned with a row of geometric motifs in white, yellow, red, blue, and green on the blue striped ground. Side borders deep red, edged with two parallel bands of tiny black-and-white stripes. Central or S.India, late 18th/ early 19th century. See 'Treasures from India' catalogue pp.100-101.

Accepted by HM Treasury on 21st March, 1963 in lieu of tax and conveyed to National Trust ownership on 29th November 1963.
