Summary
Huqqa snake cover - One of four huqqa snake covers, embroidered with coloured silk and silver gilt thread; richly embroidered decoration of gold foil silk thread, sequins, iridescent beetles' wings; with borders of applied velvet flowering plants in red and green, and with chevron bands; gold tinsel fringes; red mashru lining. Ensuite with Huqqa mat 1180738.3. Mughal style, mid 18th century. See 'Treasures from India' catalogue pg.104 / No. 148.iii.
Provenance
Collected by Robert Clive (1725-1774). The 1774 and 1775 include numerous references to huqqa furnishings. Accepted by HM Treasury on 21st March, 1963 in lieu of tax and conveyed to National Trust ownership on 29th November 1963.
