Summary
Huqqa snake cover - One of four huqqa snake covers, embroidered with coloured silk and silver gilt thread. Red woolen broadcloth with encircling embroidered bands of scrolling stems, flowers, birds and insects in coloured thread on a ground of fine couched silver gilt strips, the broad edge with a tufted gold fringe. Companion to huqqa mat 1180738.1. Mughal style, mid 18th century.
Provenance
Collected by Robert Clive (1725-1774). The 1774 and 1775 include numerous references to huqqa furnishings. Accepted by HM Treasury on 21st March, 1963 in lieu of tax and conveyed to National Trust ownership on 29th November 1963.
