Summary
Kidney shaped fan of curved white feathers with a central carved and turned ivory stick handle; the point of union decorated with a lotus medallion, its central rosette mother-of-pearl. The handle with a red silk tassel. Also see 1180691 - fan with painted decoration. China (Canton), late 18th century.
Provenance
Probably collected by Lady Henrietta Clive (1758-1830). 'A Box of Fans' is amongst 'Articles from Madras' in the Portland Place inventory of 1802. The London home of George Herbert, 2nd Earl of Powis (II) (1755-1801), Henrietta's brother. Accepted by HM Treasury on 21st March, 1963 in lieu of tax and conveyed to National Trust ownership on 29th November 1963
