Summary
Carved double-sided comb (panava), with red and black lacquer staining; showing (on both sides) a Hindu female deity, probably the goddess Shri (also known as Lakshmi) with two attendants. Beaded Sinhalese pattern above and below the central carved panel (design known as 'arimbuva'). Sri Lanka, 18th century. See 'Treasure from India' catalogue pg.91.
Provenance
Collected by Robert Clive (1725-1774) along with 1180682. Listed on 1774 and 1775 inventories as 'two ivory combs'. Accepted by HM Treasury on 21st March, 1963 in lieu of tax and conveyed to National Trust ownership on 29th November 1963.
