Summary
Box, ivory veneers on a wooden carcass, with silver mounts and sandalwood lining; the interior divided into four equal compartments. The lid decorated with a floral border to the edge and a central inscription 'The Right Honorable Lord Clive - Governor of Fort St. George', within a bamboo garland. The sides decorated with floral borders. Ring handles. E.India (Vizagapatam), c.1800. See catalogue pg.85-86 / no.110.
Provenance
The inscription is dedicated to Edward Clive (1754-1839) becoming Governor of Madras (1798-1803). 'An Ivory Box with Lord Clive's name on' is also mentioned in the 1802 inventory of Portland Place, the London home of George Herbert 2nd Earl of Powis (II) (1755-1801), Lady Clive's brother. Accepted by HM Treasury on 21st March, 1963 in lieu of tax and conveyed to National Trust ownership on 29th November 1963.
