Summary
Gouache painting on paper, Serfoji II Bhonsle (1777-1832) with a Minister, India Company (Tanjore) School, late 18th century. A portrait of Serfoji II Bhonsle, the last ruler of the Bhonsle dynasty of the Maratha principality of Thanjavur (Tanjore), with a minister at right. Serfoji II standing with the hilt of a straight sword in his right hand, pointing with his left forefinger at the sword; in a European interior (cabriole-legged side table and draped curtain, rosewater sprinkler on the table). His minister in profile stands facing him with hands raised.
Provenance
Purchased by the National Trust with funding from The National Heritage Memorial Fund from John George Herbert, 8th Earl of Powis and Powis Estate Trustees in August 1999.
