Caption
Robert Clive possessed a number of Mughal and Persian pictures and this was the only hunting scene to remain at Powis Castle. It seems that this was acquired from General Carnac to who, Shuja ad-daula surrendered after the defeat of his Maratha allies in 1765.
Summary
Gouache with gold and silver leaf on paper on cotton, A Lion Hunt of Shuja-ud-Daula (1732- 1775) the Subedar Nawab of Oudh attributed to Mir Kalan Khan (fl.c.1730-1775), Mughal School, c.1760. The Mughal Nawab Wazir, Shuja ud-Duala with a large retinue attacks a lion with his sword, while mounted on his horse. The hunt conducted on sand banks at the confluence of the Ganges and Jumna rivers. The fort of Allahabad on the far bank. See 'Treasures from India' catalogue pg.123.
Provenance
Collected by Robert Clive (1725-1774). Listed amongst pictures brought in 1771. Brought to Powis Castle from Walcot Hall in 1930. Accepted by HM Treasury on 21st March, 1963 in lieu of tax and conveyed to National Trust ownership on 29th November 1963.
