Summary
A sword or pata. A steel gauntlet sword ('pata'); the gauntlet with decoration in low relief, has a straight double-edged blade riveted to a long reinforcement plate extended from the gauntlet. The grip, a cross-bar within the gauntlet, is rivetted to its sides; another bar hooks into riveted lugs a the open end to balance the weight of the blade. The blade is from a German broadsword of the mid 17th century and was probably made in Solingen. It bears a residual 'running wolf' mark. Provenance
Accepted by HM Treasury on 21st March, 1963 in lieu of tax and conveyed to National Trust ownership on 29th November 1963.
