Summary
A knife with walrus-ivory grip, the watered-steel blade finely inlaid on the back with a scroll of flowers and palmettes in gold between narrow linear borders, a small section of decoration reserved on a gold ground towards the hilt, with more gold decoration on the back of the hilt. The bolsters overlaid with gold. Northern India, 18th century. See 'Treasures from India' catalogue, p.46 / no.29.
Provenance
Collected by Robert Clive (1725-1774). One of the three bone handled knives listed in the 1774 and 1775 inventories. Accepted by HM Treasury on 21st March, 1963 in lieu of tax and conveyed to National Trust ownership on 29th November 1963.
