Summary
A composite wooden bow, the inner edge and hand grip covered in hide. Gilt, over painted with clear red varnish and gilt flower-heads. Hyderabad, India, 1788 or 1789. Possibly given in 1804 to Edward Clive (1754-1839) by George Gilbert Keble, who was Secretary to the Government in Madras.
Provenance
Collected by Edward Clive (1754-1839). A letter from G.G. Keble to Lord Powis dated 1804 '...to convey to your L/ship a Bow & Quiver of Arrows from Hyperbad...' (British Library, MSS Eur G37/71/1) George Gilbert Keble was Secretary to the Government in Madras. Accepted by HM Treasury on 21st March, 1963 in lieu of tax and conveyed to National Trust ownership on 29th November 1963.
