Summary
Circular leather shield (dhal), covered with burnished black lacquer. Applied gilt copper crescent and large central boss with an openwork design of four tigers sharing the same head, their legs radiating outwards to give a sense of movement, a circle of palmettes encloses them, the piercing reveals a red velvet ground beneath. The knuckle-pad of green velvet edged with green and yellow chevron-patterned braid, two leather grips, origianlly covered with green velvet, attached to four iron rings. two drilled holes near the crescent, (for old hanging ). Provenance
Accepted by HM Treasury on 21st March, 1963 in lieu of tax and conveyed to National Trust ownership on 29th November 1963.
