Summary
Oil painting on canvas, The Duke of Richmond's 'Rough Robin' with the Jockey Frank Buckle up by Benjamin Marshall (Leicestershire 1767 - London 1835), signed and dated bottom centre B. Marshall pt. 1830 and inscribed bottom centre ROUGH ROBIN. The racehorse stands in the centre, facing left; at the left, the trainer, on horseback, halts to speak with the jockey, in front of the finishing post marked TMM. Two other riders are seen from the back in the distance on the right. The presence of this picture at Plas Newydd may be due to the marriage in 1817 of Lady Caroline Paget, eldest daughter of the 1st Marquess to the 5th Duke of Richmond.
