Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Prince Frederick Augustus, Duke of York and Albany (1763-1827) and his Horse by Eduard Ströhling (Düsseldorf 1768 - London after 1826). The Duke of York on horseback, wearing uniform and a cocked hat, a cannon in the right foreground. The Duke appears mounted as he does in PLN/P/92 and PLN/P/93 beside the same mortar and saluting officer. The background, however, has been altered to accommodate the Achilles statue and a pillar, surmounted by a lion on which the names of Alexandria, Maida and Talavera are inscribed. The 18-foot 33-tonne statue of Achilles, the Greek hero of the Trojan War, by Sir Richard Westmacott commemorates the soldier and politician, Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington (1769-1852).The body of the statue is modelled on an antique figure on the Quirinale in Rome. The head is the based on the Duke himself. It was installed by order of King George III and unveiled on 18 June 1822.
