Caption
Colonel Henry Paget is being comforted after the amputation of his leg. The scene shows a fictitious meeting between the Duke of Wellington and Paget shortly after his right leg had been amputated after the Battle of Waterloo in 1815. Coene, painter of genre and historical scenes, had been a pupil of the Brussels Academy and five years after this picture was painted he became Professor, a role he continued to great acclaim until his death.

The 1st Marquess being comforted after the amputation of his leg, the scene shows a fictitious meeting between Wellington and Henry William shortly after his right leg had been amputated.

Gift from the descendant of one of the sitters, the 7th Duke of Wellington, to his godson, Alexander Paget, Earl of Uxbridge, later 8th Marquess of Anglesey (b. 1950), a descendant of the other and presented by him to the National Trust, 1992
