Summary
Eight-day turret clock, Anonymous,c.1750. Two-train, ‘plate and spacer’ construction movement with dead-beat escapement (embracing 10 ½ teeth) and with pinned count-wheel hour-striking (with the striking pins on the great wheel). The barrels are of wood. The green-painted wooden dial of diamond shape has gilt roman numerals and hands and has the date 1609 in the corners, the dial centre marked in gilt: “TM”. The bell above has 1609 and TM cast into it. Note: The date on the dial is either spurious or perhaps refers to an earlier movement. The pendulum, escapement, motion work, warning wheel pinion, and hands are all later (c.1850) replacements. The clock would almost certainly originally have had a single, hour hand.
Provenance
Fixture of the building. Chirk Castle was acquired from Lt-Col Ririd Myddelton (1902–1988) by the National Land Fund and handed, on loan for 99 years, to the Secretary of State for Wales. In 1981 Chirk was transferred into the ownership of the National Trust.
