Summary
An eight-day tavern timepiece in a black japanned case, English, dated 1763, signed 'Jones, Chester', possibly by John Jones (fl. 1730-d. 1764). Having a single-train, four-pillar movement (with wooden dust cover) with anchor escapement. The square black dial with applied, moulded edge and with chapter ring painted with roman hours and arabic five-minute markers, framing the words 'Jones, Chester'. Also fitted with two pierced brass hands. The floor-length trunk (probably extended) fitted with a hinged rectangular door with moulded edge and painted with the Myddelton crest and the date 1763. On a plinth base.

Provenance
Amongst the chattels that, in 1978, were acquired along with Chirk Castle from Lt-Col Ririd Myddelton (1902–1988) by the National Land Fund and handed, on loan for 99 years, to the Secretary of State for Wales. In 1981 Chirk was transferred into the ownership of the National Trust. On loan to the Trust from Guy Charles Myddelton. Gifted to Guy C. Myddelton from Captain David Myddelton in 2010. Purchased by the National Trust from Mr Guy Myddelton in 2023.

Inside trunk: This clock came from Gwaenynog. near Denbigh. and formerly belonged to the Myddeltons. of that place Sept. 1893.
