Summary
A carved giltwood console table, one of a pair,English, 18th century, the rectangular brocatello marble top above frieze bands of egg-and-dart moulding and foliate forms, the frieze centred by a female mask surrounded by pierced rocaille carving featuring scrolls and leaves, each front corner with an acanthus carved covering supported by a carved opposing eagle with outstretched wings, perched on a scroll with a square base, the rear supports of scroll form with foliate motif decoration, affixed to the walls, the rear corners of the marble tops with small rectangular sections removed, filled with wooden blocks, the pine underside of the table with one support bar, painted with a yellow wash, inscriptions to the underside in white crayon (?) 'A. LEE/ E. FORSTER/ 11 NOV 1933', other text in pink crayon indecipherable.
Provenance
Property of Mr. H. S. Goodhart-Rendel (1887-1959) who gave Hatchlands Park to the National Trust in 1945. Following Mr. Goodhart-Rendel's death the tables were Accepted in Lieu and transferred by the Treasury to the National Trust in 1962. Listed in the Hatchlands Park 1965 inventory.
