Summary
Baby's Chemise. A baby's linen chemise/shirt dated 1740 (circa). Fabric of undyed linen plain weave. Trimmed at shoulder, needle lace insertion, 'Hollie-point' knotted buttonhole, includes three crowns; and at neck and sleeve edge linen bobbin lace 'Valenciennes'. Embroidered scallopes, detached buttonhole stitch; cream silk ribbon. Hand sewn, long sleeves, edged at neck and sleeve. Identical details to a shirt/chemise are illustrated in The Identification of Lace by Pat Earnshaw, dated early 18th century. Similar work can be seen on a set of baby clothes illustrated 285 in Lace, A History, Santina Levy and dated to mid 18th century. The design of the Valenciennes lace is 1730 rather than 1750.
Provenance
Given by Phillip Yorke III (1905-1978) along with the estate, house and contents to the National Trust in 1973.
