Summary
Umbrella. Parasol. Carriage pagoda parasol dated 1820 (circa). Fabric of emerald green damask with gold silk at border brocade, woven to shape. Design of repeating plant form on main ground, border of scrolling flower, thistle and three-leaf clover. A folding stick of carved ivory. Ferule, ribs and stretchers are metal with square cross section and whalebone tips. Lined with cream silk, plain weave. Trimmed with cream silk fringe, ivory ring to close. Label 'L.M.Yorke' handwritten on luggage label (note; label not found October 2008). Hand sewn. The cream silk lining is shattered and the handle is broken. Carved ivory handle imported from China early 19th century. Although the label suggests that it would date to the 1870's it is almost certainly much earlier. Hand sewn.
