Caption
If objects could talk this substantial cistern, now in the Dining Room, would tell a tale of a memorable party at Erddig in 1792. It was filled with more than 20 gallons of punch for Simon Yorke II's (1771-1834) coming-of-age party. While Simon may have demonstrated due decorum, the same cannot be said of a fourteen-year-old guest Charles Apperley, who was taken to bed upstairs, midway through the proceedings, in a drunken stupor! The beautiful marble cistern, supplied by London mason and stone-carver John Deval, was for much of its life displayed in the house's Entrance Hall but was relocated to the more fitting Dining Room when the National Trust restored the house in the 1970s.
