Summary
Presentation Cup. A two-handled vase-shaped cup and cover on a square base, fluted foot and stem, with partly-fluted body engraved with a coat-of-arms on a mantle, with long, reeded handles chased with foliage at the ends. Rising cover with gadrooned and fluted top and cone finial. On a square ebonised plinth with moulded base and plaque. Daniel Smith and Robert Sharp, 1787. Inscription '8th Aug.1879 / Presented by the Corps to Captain Yorke of Erddig / Commanding Officer from 1862 to 1879 / Aug. 26th 1879 (on rectangular plaque on plinth) Motto with arms 'Nil Desperandum'. It has a paper covered wooden storage case.
Provenance
Given by Phillip Yorke III (1905-1978) along with the estate, house and contents to the National Trust in 1973.
