Summary
Oil painting on canvas, The Magdalen, after Ambrosius Benson (Lombardy c.1495 – Bruges c.1550). A half-length female figure, in black and red robes with white sleeves, holds a jar of ointment, the Magdalen's attribute because according to the biblical story she anointed Christ's body. The original picture of around 1530 is in the Royal Collection (owned by Henry VIII) and another version is at the Groeninge Museum, Bruges.
Provenance
In an undated Erddig inventory early 19th century (circa 1820 after cleaning), as 'Fair Rosamund'; thence by descent until given by Philip Yorke III (1905-1978) along with the estate, house and contents to the National Trust in 1973
