Caption
Clockwork toys date back to the 15th century and at first were only enjoyed by royalty. By the late 1800s they could be mass produced and the young squires of Erddig had several in their toy collection, including this colourful butterfly.

Toy. A clockwork butterfly with multi-coloured celluloid wings, a fabric covered metal body and with a rubber sucker attachment underneath.
Provenance
Given by Phillip Yorke III (1905-1978) along with the estate, house and contents to the National Trust in 1973.
