Summary
A green-painted iron camp bed, English, circa 1865, by R. W. Winfield & Son of Cambridge Street Works, Birmingham and London. With gilt and hatched legs on castors, and with curving spars forming a canopy. The mattress support and bed springs all marked 'GAYELIN PATENT' (Gayelin of 462 Oxford St., London). -- In 1861, Robert Walter Winfield of Birmingham registered Patent 2724 for the invention of 'an improvement or improvements in ornamenting metallic bedsteads and other articles of metallic furniture'.
Provenance
Given by Philip Yorke III (1905-1978) along with the estate, house and contents to the National Trust in 1973.
