A set of mahogany metamorphic library steps, converting into a stool, English, circa 1789 The underside of the leather-upholstered hinged seat fitted with a single tread, another pair of treads folding out of the stool's frame. On tapering square-section legs.
Provenance
Possibly the 'ladder stool for Library' for which Philip Yorke I paid £1 18s on 27 November 1789. Given by Philip Yorke III (1905-1978) along with the estate, house and contents to the National Trust in 1973.
