Summary
A mahogany serpentine dressing chest, England, circa 1765. Of mahogany veneers on deal, and with deal to the carcase and bracket feet, the dustboards lipped with oak, later pine backboards. The serpentine-fronted top with moulded edge, above four cockbeaded mahogany drawers, the uppermost once fitted for dressing and with mahogany side linings - one of them still with ink compartment front (now fixed shut) and later pine rear lining. The drawers each with a pair of brass bale handles and brass thread escutcheons. With base moulding and shaped bracket feet.
Provenance
Possibly originally part of the furnishings of either Newnham, Hertfordshire, or a house in Park Street, Mayfair, which Philip Yorke I (1743-1804) inherited in 1770 from his uncle James Hutton. Given by Phillip Yorke III (1905-1978) along with the estate, house and contents to the National Trust in 1973.
