Summary
A carved fruitwood dressing stool, English, circa 1720, one of a pair. Possibly original webbing and linen bottom cloth. Stool has a fixed cover of a plain glazed cotton over 2 previous fixed covers visible around the edges of the glazed cotton (possibly a printed fabric with a red worsted cover of circa 1720 underneath. The stool has a glazed cotton floral loose cover over red worsted covers (of circa 1720?). Previous survey describes loose covers made up in 1977 from chintz found in the house. On four cabriole legs [1147317.1 has a replacement leg], carved to the knee with a scallop shell issuing a pendant harebell within a broader strapwork border. The toes of the pad feet carved with a harebell above a pair of divergent, broadening lines. -- These are an unusual and rare set of stools, possibly associated with the refurbishment of Erddig in the 1720s. Another stool at Erddig - NT 1147191 - is probably from the same set.

Given by Philip Yorke III (1905-1978) along with the estate, house and contents to the National Trust in 1973.
