Summary
A carved fruitwood dressing stool, English, circa 1720, one of a pair. Webbing and base cloth of later date (different to 1147317.2). Stool has a fixed cover of wool damask, as the Blue bed, over 2 previous fixed covers visible around the edges (one printed fabric over a red worsted from 1720). The stool has a later glazed floral loose cover. Previous survey describes loose covers to be made up in 1977 from chintz found in the house. with later glazed floral covers over red worsted covers of circa 1720. Of four cabriole legs [this with one replacement leg], carved to the knee with a scallop shell issuing a pendant harebell within a broader strapwork border. The toes of the pad feet carved with a harebell above a pair of divergent, broadening lines. -- These are an unusual and rare set of stools, possibly associated with the refurbishment of Erddig in the 1720s. Another stool at Erddig - NT 1147191 - is probably from the same set.
