Summary
A carved fruitwood dressing stool, English, circa 1720. Very similar to another pair of fruitwood stools [NT 1147317.1 & .2] at Erddig, although the latter are differently upholstered, with later glazed floral covers over red worsted covers of circa 1720. Of four cabriole legs, carved to the knee with a scallop shell issuing a pendant harebell within a broader strapwork border. The toes of the pad feet carved with a harebell above a pair of divergent, broadening lines. Covered in needlework stitched as bold leaves and foliage, in red, ochre and green against a blue ground. -- This stool, together with its near counterparts, form an unusual and rare set of stools, possibly associated with the refurbishment of Erddig in the 1720s.
Provenance
Given by Philip Yorke III (1905-1978) along with the estate, house and contents to the National Trust in 1973.
