Summary
A mahogany dwarf press, or dwarf wardrobe, English, in the manner of Gillows of Lancaster, circa 1800 - 1820. Of breakfront form and the top with reeded edge. The breakfront section fitted with three oak and blue paper-lined slides enclosed by a doors with applied reeded panel mouldings, embellished at each corner with a square plaque carved with a boss of concentric circles. Flanked at either end by a conforming door, each enclosing a pair of shelves. The central cupboard doors fitted with a brass sprung catch with thumb latch. Raised on a plinth base. -- Very similar - and possibly bought to match - a pair of bedsteps at Erddig [NT 1147120.1 & .2]. Another dwarf press or wardrobe at Erddig - NT 1147175 - is fitted with different handles and a different interior, but is also very similar. It is probable that all were purchased by the Yorkes at the same time. None of them are stamped with a maker's name or mark, but they are very high quality, and made in the manner of Gillows of Lancaster.
Provenance
Given by Philip Yorke III (1905-1978) along with the estate, house and contents to the National Trust in 1973.
