Summary
A mahogany and inlaid clothes press, or press cupboard, English, early 19th century. Topped by a moulded and cornice above a pair of doors veneered in well-figured mahogany and with an oval with holly and ebony-inlaid edge, the oval framed by applied reeded mouldings with flower-carved tablet corners. The doors enclosing four mahogany and oak slides. The back panelled and all-over covered in red wash. The lower section of two short over two graduated long drawers. All of the drawers with fronts of mahogany veneered onto softwood, and with ivory lozenge-shaped escutcheons and good quality brass knob handles cast with lion masks. The drawers lined with oak. The lower apron centred by a tablet and with outswept bracket feet.
Provenance
Listed in an inventory in 1967 in the Print Room. Given by Phillip Yorke III (1905-1978) along with the estate, house and contents to the National Trust in 1973.
