Summary
A set of mahogany bed steps, English, in the manner of Gillows of Lancaster, circa 1800 - 1820, one of a pair. Topped by a carpet-lined hinged lid, the riser is applied with reeded panel mouldings, embellished at each corner with a square plaque carved with a boss of concentric circles. The lower tread is carpet-lined, and raised on ring-turned tapering legs fitted with brass caps and castors. -- Very similar - and possibly bought to match - a mahogany dwarf press or wardrobe in the same bedroom [NT 1147136] and another very similar dwarf press in another bedroom [NT 1147175]. It is probable that all of these pieces of furniture were purchased by the Yorkes at the same time. None of them are stamped with a maker's name or mark, but they are very high quality, and made in the manner of Gillows of Lancaster.
Provenance
Given by Phillip Yorke III (1905-1978) along with the estate, house and contents to the National Trust in 1973.
