Summary
Model; Pagoda - An 18th century model of a Chinese pagoda, in mother-of-pearl, by Elizabeth Ratcliffe; the five storeys hung with bells; resting on a rocky base inset with coloured stones and glass; the octagonal platform inscribed 'Erthigg 1767'; contained in a hexagonal glass panelled case of truncated obelisk form, the lower border carved with interlaced rosettes, resting on the backs of three carved and silvered chimera supported by a three-sided stand, crisply carved at the angles with scrolling foliage, with concave shaped panels of fretted 'Chinese Paling' form painted in green, grey and white on claw and ball feet resting on a circular oak base. The case possibly made by John Linnell (d. 1796) Berkeley Square, London.
Provenance
Design based on Sir William Chambers' pagoda, Kew. Made for Yorke's London house, Park Lane. Given by Phillip Yorke III (1905-1978) along with the estate, house and contents to the National Trust in 1973.
