Summary
A mahogany stand, English, circa 1760-70, supporting NT 1147076, a morocco leather trunk. The stand with upper edge moulding and with friezes with small spandrels. Raised on four legs with inner chamfers.
Full description
By family repute, the trunk brought to Erddig by Elizabeth Cust (1750-79) on her marriage to Philip Yorke I (1743-1804) in 1770. Interestingly, a very similar trunk (NT 434880) survives at Belton, Elizabeth's family home. Both trunks are lined with the same marbled paper, and fitted with the same handles and lockplate, albeit the studwork forms a different pattern, and they are raised on very different stands.
Provenance
Probably came to Erddig on the marriage of Elizabeth Cust (1750-79) to Philip Yorke I (1743-1804) in 1770. Given by Philip Yorke III (1905-1978) along with the estate, house and contents to the National Trust in 1973.
