Summary
A giltwood and composition pier or end table, English, circa 1830, the marble top circa 1720, one of a pair. Topped by a slab of breche violette marble, with moulded edge and re-entrant corners. The base with arched and scroll-edged aprons, the front apron with central acanthus spray. Raised on four cabriole legs, edged with foliated 'C'-scrolls, and carved with a cabochon to the knee. The feet formed from foliate scrolls. Many of the enrichments applied composition. -- The marble tops of these tables appear to be significantly earlier than the 19th century giltwood and composition bases. Their signs of age, and the style of their corners, which are re-entrant, prompted Martin Drury to suggest that the tops might be those which once topped walnut bases, listed in the inventory taken at Erddig in 1726 as '2 Marble tables with Walnutree Fraimes' in the Saloon. They might also have been the tops to the '2 Marble Tables' listed in the same inventory in the Hall.

Given by Philip Yorke III (1905-1978) along with the estate, house and contents to the National Trust in 1973.
