Summary
A card table, one of a pair of harewood and burr walnut-veneered fold-over card tables, English, circa 1780. Reminiscent, in the choice of timbers and veneers, and in the 'lipped' brass caps to the feet (fitted to 1146941.1 only), of the work of cabinet-makers John Mayhew (d. 1811) & William Ince (d. 1804). Of 'D'-shape, the top veneered in harewood, crossbanded in walnut and strung with ebony. Fitted with brass hinges and lined to the inside with baize. The friezes ebony strung, and raised on four tapering square-section legs, strung with ebony at the angles and inlaid where they meet the friezes with rectangular reserves of burr walnut. The rear legs hinged in the frieze to support the upper leaf when open.
Provenance
Given by Philip Yorke III (1905-1978) along with the estate, house and contents to the National Trust in 1973.
