Summary
Oil painting on panel, An Old Man with his Hands folded in Prayer, Flemish School or German School, early 16th century. Inscribed on a ledge across the bottom of the painting, in gold paint:[Bene] DICTIO DOMINI SUPER [vos]. A head-and-shoulders portrait of an old man or woman (so old, that the gender is no longer obvious), seen, behind a parapet, en face, with hands folded in prayer in front, dressed in a black coat and cap, over white headgear that covers his ears, with white collar and cuffs.
Provenance
First mentioned in 1911 inventory although probably owned from the 17th century and thence by descent until acquired in 1948 by HM Government when Sir Lyonel, 4th Bt (1854 – 1952) and Sir Cecil Tollemache, 5th Bt (1886 – 1969) presented Ham House to the National Trust, and entrusted to the care of the Victoria & Albert Museum, until 1990, when returned to the care of the National Trust, and to which ownership was transferred in 2002
