Summary
Watercolour and bodycolour on vellum miniature, The 'D'Avalos Allegory' (Alfonso d'Avalos, Marchese del Pascara and del Vasto (Guasto) (1502 -1546) and his Wife, Mary of Aragon in 1523) (after Peter Oliver, after Titian) by David des Granges (London 1611 – after 1670), signed and dated 1640. Inscribed: Titiano. The marquis in armour and crimson doublet, his wife or mistress en déshabillé in a crimson skirt and blue cloak, holding a crystal ball (? black cannon ball), putto with blue wings holding fascine, admiring figure to right wearing a bay wreath, a male figure behind holding up a basket, grey wall to left, sky to right. This watercolour miniature is a copy after the one of 1629 in the Royal Collectioin - originally in the collection of Charles I (recorded by his surveyor Abraham van der Doort) by Peter Oliver.
