Portrait miniature, watercolour on vellum (oval), Henry Rich, 1st Earl of Holland (1590 - 1649) by Samuel Cooper (London 1608 – London 1672) in the studio of John Hoskins the elder (Wells c.1590 – London 1665), circa 1632-1634. Inscribed on original oakboard frame on reverse 'Earl of Holland/beheaded/No. 122/ by Old Hoskins/ Pret 6£ :0:0' A head-and-shoulders portrait of a man turned to the right, gazing to the right, in a green and gold suit, scalloped lace collar, ribands of KB and KG. Pale green eyes, long auburn hair, wispy beard and moustache, pale pasty face, intent expression. Village and blue hills to right, stormy sky background, lit from the left.
