Summary
Watercolour on ivory, Lionel Robert Tollemache (1775-1793) by Richard Cosway RA (Tiverton, Devon 1742 - London 1821), signed and dated 1793. An oval head and shoulders portrait miniature of Lionel Robert Tollemache turned slightly to the left, head turned to the right, in Guards uniform (scarlet, blue facings, one epaulette), black neckcloth and white lace cravat, against a sky background. Lionel Robert Tollemache, grandson of Lionel Tollemache, 4th Earl of Dysart (1708-70) served as a cornet in the Coldstream Guards and was killed shortly before the Siege of Valenciennes aged 18. A replica of this miniature, almost certainly by Cosway, is at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (inv.no. 24.80.499).
