Summary
Black chalk heightened with white on paper, Elizabeth Capel, Countess of Carnarvon (1633-1678) by Joseph van Aken (Antwerp 1709 - London 1749). A three-quarter length portrait originally thought to be of her sister, Mary Capel, Duchess of Beaufort (1630-1715), after Sir Peter Lely, later re-attributed and identified by Alastair Laing, National Trust's Curator of Pictures & Sculpture, 1986-2012. The sitter was the daughter of Arthur Capel, 1st Baron Capel and the wife of Charles Dormer, 2nd Earl of Carnarvon.
