Summary
Pastel on paper, Lionel Robert Tollemache (1775-1793) by Hugh Douglas Hamilton RHA (Dublin 1739/40 – Dublin 1808). Oval. Head and shoulders portrait in the round, he wears a blue double breatsted greatcoat with open neck revealing white bow. His hair is powdered grey. He looks to the right of the scene. Frame of gilded wood about 1793.
Marks and inscriptions
Inscription on the back reads - 'Lyonel Robert Tollemache, unfortunately killed at the Siege of Valencianne by the splinter of a shell thrown from the Town a short time before it surrendered. He was killed at the age of eighteen, July 1793. He was ensign in the first Regiment of Guards. He was the only son of the Honble John Tollemache and Lady Bridget Henly, daughter of the Earl of Northington. John Tollemache was ye fourth son of Lionel, the second Earl of Dysart and ye nine Bt Tollemach.' 'second' has been scribbled out and '4th counting from Wil Murray' inserted
