Summary
Plumbago graphite drawing on vellum, John Maitland, 2nd Earl of Lauderdale (1616-1682) by David Paton (b.Edinburgh fl.1660-1708) , signed and dated 1669. A head-and-shoulders portrait, turned to right, glancing at spectator, wearing a loose flowing cloak and lace cravat, full-bottomed wig, small moustache, double chin. Plain scumbled background lit from the left. It was executed by the Scottish draughtsman before Maitland became Duke of Lauderdale and before his marriage to Elizabeth Murray.
