Summary

Oil painting on panel, An Unknown Young Painter aged 18, Italian (North Italian) School, inscribed in simulated carving into stone, top right: AETATIS 18 ANNO 1546. A three-quarter-length portrait of a youth aged 18, turned to the right, gazing at the spectator, dressed in a brown-sleeved tunic with black over-garment, and white shirt with short lace collar; short brown hair and faint moustache; brown eyes; and slightly parted mouth. He holds a paintbrush in his right hand and a palette and paintbrushes in his left. Part of the easel can be seen at the far right. The base of a column can be seen at the left, and green drapery occupies the top left corner. Possibly a portrait or even a self-portrait of Paolo Veronese (Verona 1528 -Venice 1588).

Provenance

In 1677 inventory and thence by descent until acquired in 1948 by HM Government when Sir Lyonel, 4th Bt (1854 – 1952) and Sir Cecil Tollemache, 5th Bt (1886 – 1969) presented Ham House to the National Trust, and entrusted to the care of the Victoria & Albert Museum, until 1990, when returned to the care of the National Trust, and to which ownership was transferred in 2002
