Summary
One of four embroidery panels from ecclesiastical vestments etc., including Virgin and Child, in glazed walnut frame. A cope hood depicting a figure with halo and holding an orb, seated on a throne against a background of medieval castle walls. he embroidery is carried out in silk floss long & short stitch / split stitch in yellows, greens; outlines are embroidered in dark silk. The drawing of the design in brown ink shows in bare areas of the linen. The throne and figure is carried out in appliqué on a single layer of linen. The seat has laid floss silk thread with laid and couched gold thread over the top. The four knobs on the tops of the throne are padded with circles of cardboard. Surrounding the throne is laid and couched goldthread embroidery, secured with orange silk thread in a diaper pattern, while the clothing of the seated figure is goldthread laid horizontally.To square up the shape the central lower point has been cut away and in the two lower corners triangular corners have been added, made up from fragments of red velvet and embroidery from similar works.
