Caption
The Duchess of Devonshire is here shown repairing tapestries in the High Great Chamber at Hardwick. Her resigned demeanour and slight frame, set against the monumentality of the room, convey something of the overwhelming task ahead of her, and the responsibility of looking after an historic home. Lady Evelyn Fitzmaurice was the daughter of the 5th Marquess of Lansdowne. She married, on 30 July, 1892, Victor Christian William Cavendish, 9th Duke of Devonshire (1870-1960). She bore him seven children.
