In the 1933 Devonshire Catalogue Lady Louisa Egerton suggested the possibility that the sitter might be the ‘Duke of Bullen’, mentioned in the 1601 Inventory, and may therefore represent Godfrey de Bouillon. However, this seems unlikely, and the picture was more probably conceived as a pastiche of similar paintings by Giorgione and Titian.
