Caption
This picture was once catalogued as by Tintoretto, and although extensive repainting has altered the original appearance of the picture, it is unlikely to be by him. It is, however, probably by a Venetian artist, who worked in the style of Veronese. The sitter has not been identified, although there is an old inscription on the back of the canvas calling him ‘Cardinal Alliciori’. It is possible that this picture is the same as that recorded in Devonshire House in 1761, called the ‘Archbishop of Spoletto’ by Tintoretto.
Summary
Oil painting on canvas, An Ecclesiastic, Italian (Venetian) School, 16th century. A three-quarter length portrait, seated slightly right, head facing, wearing a white robe, brown cape and black skull-cap. Noted in Devonshire Catalogue 1933 as having been inscribed on back of canvas: Cardinal Alliciori (now covered by lining canvas).
Provenance
In 1933 Catalogue of the Duke of Devonshire; thence by inheritance until, following the death of Edward William Spencer Cavendish, 10th Duke of Devonshire (1895 - 1950), Hardwick Hall and its contents were accepted by HM Treasury in part payment of death duties and transferred to the National Trust, in 1959
