Summary
Oil painting on canvas, William Spencer Cavendish, 6th Duke of Devonshire (1790-1858) by Orazio Manara (Parma 1804 – ?Paris after 1872). An oval half-length portrait, turned to left, head inclined to the right, wearing black coat and stock, white waistcoat and ribbon of Garter. He was the son of William Cavendish, 5th Duke of Devonshire (1748-1811) and Georgiana Spencer (1757-1806); died unmarried; he added the North Wing to Chatsworth, transformed the gardens and employed Paxton to build the conservatory.
Provenance
Lord Hawkesbury,Catalogue of the Pictures at Hardwick Hall; in the possession of the His Grace the Duke of Devonshire K.G. 1903; and thence by descent until, following the death of Edward William Spencer Cavendish, 10th Duke of Devonshire (1895 - 1950), Hardwick Hall and its contents were accepted by HM Treasury in part payment of death duties and transferred to the National Trust, in 1959
